Hey everyone in this awesome hunting community!
I'm a passionate hunter from southern Germany, been out in the fields for about 10 years now, mostly tracking roe deer and wild boar in the Black Forest. Got two awesome hunting dogs – a 2-year-old German Shorthaired Pointer (GSP) and a 1-year-old Bavarian Mountain Hound – and they're the best partners a guy could ask for. Nothing beats that moment when they pick up a fresh scent and lead you straight to the action!
But here's where I'm scratching my head: My younger hound is a natural tracker but gets super distracted in thick underbrush. He starts strong but loses focus after 20-30 minutes, chasing rabbits or just sniffing random stuff instead of staying on the boar trail. I've tried basic whistle commands and scent drags, but it's hit or miss. The GSP is steadier, but I want both pups to be rock-solid in dense, noisy woods where visibility is zero.
Fellow hunters and dog lovers – what's your go-to method for building google doodle baseball stamina and focus in young hunting dogs during forest training? Do you swear by e-collars for corrections, or more positive reinforcement like treats and play rewards? Any specific drills or gear that worked wonders for you?
